Follow a Newbie Friday

As I write this, this blog has been active for just one month, so I’m a total newbie. The blogging world is great, but it can really feel like you’re learning a new language and it can be quite daunting being a Newbie. There are many, many great blogs out there, and bloggers are a friendly bunch who have, in my experience, always been very welcoming to new bloggers and helped them get to grips with things like, “what’s a meme!?” and it can feel like you’re never going to work it all out. A discussion on Twitter this week really highlighted that being a newbie is a mindset – that you’re a newbie for as long as you feel like one, whether that’s two months or two years, so as well as all the great support provided by the more experienced bloggers, I think that we can be more pro-active and give ourselves a wee leg up in this strange new world.

I’d love for you to join in with our Follow a Newbie Friday Blog Hop by writing about some of the great Newbie blogs you’ve read in the last week or so and linking them up with all the others. There’s no pressure to write a post if you’ve been tagged, and you don’t need to feel you have to join in every week, but it’s always great to give a newbie a leg up. And you can go to bed at night knowing you’ve made someone very happy. Surely that’s always a good thing.

To join in, it would be great if you could:

  1. Take the time to read some newer blogs and keep a wee note of them.  If you can, try to write a wee comment for them, or give their post a wee tweet/facebook shout out if you’ve particularly enjoyed it.
  2. At the end of the week, pull your favourites together into a wee blog post for others to find them too.  It doesn’t matter if they’ve been highlighted before, and there’s no set number – 1 or 101, it’s up to you.  Do try to add a hyperlink to their blog so that not only can people find them but they get a wee ratings/Google boost (I think, but I’m a Newbie so don’t shoot me if I’m wrong).
  3. Link back to this page/my most recent Follow a Newbie Friday post in your blog so that your readers can find their way back to a longer list of blogs to read over the weekend.
  4. Use the weekly linky to add your blog to the blog hop then join in by reading the others that have been added.

You can see the weekly blog post links below which will hopefully give you some new reading.

Feel free to add our Follow a Newbie Friday badge to your sidebar and/or post to encourage as many as possible to join in with us.

    • Lol, go Mrs W! The post is written but at the last minute I thought I’d be best to have a permanent page explaining it and link it to the badge so I need to do that first. This is just a rough draft till later when I get time to write it properly.

  16. I love your follow a newbie Friday! I am very new to blogging and have started as an aside to my new business but am contemplated starting my own personal as some of the blogs you recommend on family life really make me laugh! (only when appropriate, obviously I don’t laugh if someone is having a hard time!) It is quite difficult writing as a business at times as you have to keep your professional persona on and can’t admit to giving your kids kitkats to keep them quiet while you finish your book! Keep up the good work and I love the title of your blog.

    • Lol! I know what you mean. It’s basically the same reason that I have two blogs – one is to tie in to my experiences of Gaelic Medium Education and one is for all the other random things that pass through my mind. A few people have an interest in both, but I think on the whole they have very different readers so it kind of makes it easier for me. I’ve chosen to link the two blogs so people can read both if they wish (and to explain why sometimes WordPress uses the Gaelic Medium Mum name and sometimes Slummy to Yummy Mummy) but it would be easy enough to do it totally separately. If you do set up a second one then don’t forget to stop by and let us know! I, for one, am all up for reading about the kit kats!

  18. What a brilliant idea. I’ve been blogging for a couple of months after thinking about doing it for ages. Kept putting it off afraid I’d run out of ideas. Instead, I’ve found it completely addictive but very difficult to build a readership. Following on twitter now and will come back with links for any newbies I come across.
